My goal is to help build a better world.
My research on movements and structural inequality helps us to understand dynamics of power, oppression, and ways to work towards creating a more just and equitable world for all. I also believe that scholarship should actively serve communities as well as the people and organizations committed to making a difference. This means supporting on-the-ground efforts—from community activism to policy initiatives—along with ensuring that my students are prepared to begin their lives and careers as globally-minded, critical thinkers who are inspired to have a positive social impact.
Prior to entering the doctoral program at the University of Pittsburgh, I worked as a consultant and team lead for a range of educational, social and economic justice initiatives. I've also been part of various activist and community-based projects, primarily related to affordable housing; workers’ rights; racial and gender justice; climate activism; and alternative learning/popular education, which informs my work as a teacher, public sociologist, and scholar-activist.
